Anyone understand the firefox app tab setup?

I have been using Safari, Opera, and Chrome happily, but my online classes call for Firefox. So I have been trying to set up an opening page like Safari's Top Sites, or Opera's Speed Dial, and I think it is the app tabs, but after 30 minutes of nothing happening I have had it. Does Forefox indeed have this same type of feature so that I do not have to type in every time I want to go somewhere? thankyou
