My passport expires this month, can I still apply for a Texas learner's permit?

I just passed my test and received the papers required to apply for my learner's permit in Texas. However, I was not born in the US and do not have a Texas Identification Card. My passport expires this month on the 23rd, is it still valid to the DPS if I use it as my identification when applying, or will they require one that must be valid for at least the next 6 months (which my dad says is a possibility)?
